North Carolina’s Chris Gotterup was in fine form at the Scottish Championship where he tied the course record with a blistering 9-under 61. He had a similar hard start with a double bogey-bogey opening. Then he poured in eight birdies over a stunning 15 holes to completely rifle to the front. The tournament, held at the Fairmont St Andrews, witnessed intense competition, with several top golfers vying for a spot in the upcoming Open Championship.
On Friday, Gotterup had a bit of a slow start to the day, saying he was struggling to get up in the morning. But he was able to channel that energy on the course right away. None harkened back to Champaign-Urbana more than Lay’s description, “There’s probably not too many better places to be.” He concluded by highlighting the beauty of the contest’s elite backdrop.
Robert MacIntyre was in the news during the round, making a long birdie on 18 to end up at 1-under 139. The Scotsman’s home supporters roared their approval as the 30-year-old overcame a testing course to push into the final stages.
Justin Thomas even helped his new teammates’ cause with a clutch performance for the ages. He made a 6-foot birdie on the last hole, cementing his spot toward the top of the leaderboard. This timely bucket not only gave him the lead but increased their odds and made for a thrilling end to the contest.
Xander Schauffele, who finished the day five shots back after a score of 66, displayed his trademark composure on the greens. Not easily rattled by obstacles on the course, Schauffele stayed locked in as he powered his way around the track.
Harry Hall was hot on his heels, a rookie this year, two shots back of Gotterup. Ludvig Åberg hadn’t played since coming home from his wedding break in Sweden. He enjoyed some quality time with friends and enjoyed heartwarming meals including his mother’s signature sausage while playing on a squad that was three shots back. Åberg emphasized the way his lacrosse experience enhanced his golf ability. He added, “Lacrosse, in terms of my speed, is the same kind of movement.”
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler battled the bogeyman with a few three-putts in his round. Despite the setbacks, he managed to keep his spirits high, extending his arm with a thumb up in mock celebration at various points.
Rory McIlroy turned heads with an impressive performance on the back nine, recording five birdies that showcased his skill and determination. As the tournament progresses, the excitement continues to build. Fans and players alike are looking forward to seeing how these young, talented golfers continue to shine through the next rounds.
With such a competitive field and exciting performances, the Scottish Championship promises to continue thrilling spectators and participants as they battle for coveted spots in the prestigious Open Championship.
