Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams is next in line to return. She is scheduled to make her return to the WTA Tour later this month. The 45-year-old tennis legend has accepted a wild card into the main draw of the Mubadala Citi DC Open. The whole tournament will be hosted in Washington, D.C. It’s her first competitive game in more than a year. She hasn’t played since March 19, 2024 at the Miami Open.
In her last match, Williams lost to Diana Shnaider in the first round of the tournament. This loss deepened the obstacles she’s encountered off the court. Her most recent singles victory was in 2023, where she defeated Veronika Kudermetova at the Cincinnati Open. Williams declined a wild card to play at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells earlier this year. Needless to say, this decision created a wave of enthusiasm about her return to Washington.
The Mubadala Citi DC Open, taking place later this month, is doing just that. This will be just the second time Williams has raced in this thrilling spectacle. Her ties to Washington, D.C., go back deep. She loves the positive vibe, passionate supporters and deep tradition of the city. Williams has expressed her gratitude for the support she receives from the community, stating, “I’m excited to accept a wild card to the Mubadala Citi DC Open.”
Mark Ein, the tournament’s organizer, echoed the excitement surrounding Williams’ return.
“We are so excited that Venus will be playing in the Mubadala Citi DC Open this year,” – Mark Ein
Williams’ career has been defined by incredible accomplishments and grit. As she prepares to reenter the competitive scene, her fans and the tennis community eagerly await her performance at the DC Open. This gathering marks not only her return but celebrates her dedication to bringing back the sport she’s so passionate about.
