The Minnesota Vikings expect big things from Turner in his sophomore campaign. So it’s no surprise that they chose him with the 17th overall pick last month’s NFL Draft, and that they’re planning on him being such a big factor. Turner, who has garnered attention as one of the top pass rushers available, was acquired through a strategic move that involved seven draft picks. With such a high pick, this decision has certainly heightened both short- and long-term expectations regarding his impact on the team.
Defensive coordinator Brian Flores had a lot to say about Dallas Turner. He considers Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel to be important parts too, referring to them as “three starters.” This recognition highlights the high value Flores has placed upon Turner’s developmental trajectory and expected direction-changing play on the defense.
Even with only 315 defensive snaps played in his first season, Turner has been given opportunities to showcase his talent level and versatility. Flores remarked on Turner’s development, stating, “We talked a lot about him last year and his growth throughout the season.” For his part, head coach Brad Stevens said that Dallas is just starting to figure out how he’s going to help this year.
The unique versatility Turner possesses to play almost any role makes him even more valuable to be so versatile. Flores emphasized that Turner’s contributions could manifest in multiple forms: “as a rusher, as a dropper, on the ball, off the ball, in different packages.” That level of adaptability is key for the Vikings as they seek to get the most out of their aggressive, multi-faceted defensive scheme.
Turner made a strong impression during the spring practices. It was on the first day of mandatory minicamp in a 7-on-7 period. In this one specifically, he matched up against tight end T.J. Hockenson. He proved his ability to flat out shadow and bother other players. Experiences like this are extremely important for Turner’s development though, as they help prepare him for the rigors of the NFL while lessening attached risks.
The loss of free agent Pat Jones II figure to open up some chances for Turner to expand his work in the pass-rush department. This clears the path for him to prove his talent and establish himself as a mainstay in the team’s defensive rotation.

Dallas Turner’s working on doing the little things better and trying to make bigger plays for the Vikings. Indeed, looking forward, he is likely to play an even greater role come 2025.
