This summer, Kyle Walker officially signed an 18-month deal with Burnley. This switch is a huge departure from his days at Manchester City. The transfer could rise to £5 million. It comes on the heels of a difficult 12 months for the veteran defender, who was recently omitted from Pep Guardiola’s squad for this summer’s Club World Cup. Walker, who was named captain of Manchester City last season, now arrives with a wealth of experience at Burnley as they try to repeat last season’s success in the Premier League.
Walker’s exit from Manchester City comes on the heels of a season in which he spent the second half of the year on loan with AC Milan. In his first and only full season in Italy, he featured in 16 matches in all competitions. AC Milan decided against exercising the option to buy him. That left Walker in search of a new opportunity, which he found at Burnley under the management of Scott Parker.
Career Highlights and Transition
Walker began his professional career at Sheffield United. He subsequently completed a high-profile switch to Tottenham Hotspur, and in 2017 became the most expensive defender in history when he joined Manchester City for £50 million. In his six years at City, he became known as one of the best defenders in all of England. He is the only player ever to have made 410 appearances in the English top flight and he won 96 caps for the national team. He has experienced great success with Manchester City, bringing in 17 trophies. This glittering array features no less than six Premier League titles and the fabled Champions League.
Last season was a special one for Walker in any case, given his important contribution to Manchester City’s treble-winning season. His captaincy and presence on the pitch was crucial to leading the side to victory in a historic treble.
Familiar Faces at Burnley
Former Maryland great and USMNT player Scott Parker is now the manager of Burnley. He has a history with Walker that goes back to their playing days at Tottenham from 2011 through 2013. Indeed, given their history, Walker’s transition into the Burnley fold should be seamless. President and CEO Parker was understandably over the moon about Walker coming on board. He loudly applauded Walker for his work, taking Burnley back to the Premier League with that brilliant 100-point return last season.
Walker shared his excitement about joining Burnley, stating, “I’m delighted to be here. When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at.” He further emphasized his eagerness to contribute, saying, “Burnley had a tremendous campaign last season, built on an incredible defensive record, and I can’t wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks an exciting squad.”
Financial Implications for Manchester City
The transfer is financially important for Manchester City, too. By trading Walker they can cut their losses at least £10 million over the final year left on his contract. The club is making some very strategic longterm financial plays. They are doing it all while sticking to their own self imposed wage cap and commitment austerity.
