With just five runs in it, England edged past India in a thrill-a-minute third T20 encounter. That exhilarating match was held at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground on Sunday. England’s surprise victory keeps their hopes alive in the five-match series, with the final test taking place in Austin, Texas. With this victory, the series score goes to India 2-1. The teams meet one more time on Wednesday at Old Trafford. Next, they’ll face off against one another in the championship round in Sunday’s finals at Edgbaston.
In a nailbiting encounter, India needed 12 runs from the final over to win the thrilling match. England’s Lauren Bell, who bowled that all-important final over, showed incredible composure in a tough situation, allowing just six runs. Her impressive performance included troubling India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur with her slower balls, which ultimately led to Kaur’s dismissal for just two runs. Bell finished her stint with figures of 1-37.
We’re a sad and weary opening act to a beautiful story. From us, tonight we showed up and played physical and really won the battle. We weren’t at our best in every area today, we still find ourselves in the series,” said Sophia Dunkley. She went on to be named Player of the Match for her extraordinary batting display.
Dunkley’s partnership with her teammate was key to laying down a challenging target for India to chase. She admitted, “Neither of us have played very well at the top of the order in this series so far. We both love batting together, it was nice to get a partnership going.” Her leadership and long hours of work behind the scenes were key to maintaining England’s momentum in the wake of a tough start.
What a phenomenal display both teams provided on the field. India appeared to be on their way until the last third of their innings. Especially those last few overs, they looked really calm, they stuck to their game plans and it made the difference.
Harmanpreet Kaur reflected on her team’s performance, stating, “I think we were in the game until the 16th over, but after that we didn’t utilise our chances. We did well, but there are a lot of learnings.” Kaur showed tremendous leadership by taking her team’s hand through contentious times. She knew the what-ifs that would have made it go differently.
India’s Amanjot needed to score eight runs off three balls in the final over but could only manage a single run. This left India only fractionally short of what they needed, reflecting the drama and uncertainty that is often a hallmark of T20 cricket.
Lauren Bell’s bowling was a highlight especially, earning rave reviews from her fellow players. Charlie Dean added, “She has truly changed the game. Those wickets, that pace, she was fiery. Dean then underscored Bell’s capacity to handle high-stakes pressure as a potential game-changer for England.
Tammy Beaumont soiled the debut party as England’s new captain for this Test. She responded positively to Dean’s enthusiasm around the dynamic, exciting, fun nature of the game. “You just live for those moments in cricket,” said Beaumont. As captain, those defining moments are the ones that really count. In the end, we prevailed on the right side of history.”
The final was not simply a display of individual excellence but rather the value of cohesive teamwork and strategic execution. As England prepares for their next match, there is certainly a new sense of confidence after this intense battle-won victory.
