Lawsuit Filed Against Bills’ Hairston Over Alleged Sexual Assault

A woman has recently sued Maxwell Hairston, a former first-round draft pick of the Buffalo Bills. Further, she claims he sexually assaulted her. The underlying action Plaintiff, Rebecca Hendryx, claims that Hairston sexually assaulted her in 2021 when the two were students at the University of Kentucky. By now the case has garnered quite a bit of media frenzy. Hairston, who has not been charged or convicted of any crime, is now being subjected to the ultimate punishment or purge—career destruction—over unproven accusations.

As per the allegations from the lawsuit, Hairston and Hendryx resided in the same university dormitory during the first months of 2021. When Hendryx refused an invitation to continue the activities outdoors, Hairston reportedly entered her personal space uninvited by walking into her hotel room. The circumstances of that crash are not public. Yet, Hendryx’s legal action brings to light some important issues regarding student safety and accountability at the troubled university.

Dani Jaffe, a spokeswoman for the University of Kentucky and university police, emphasized the institution’s commitment to addressing sexual assault allegations. She stated, “Sexual assault allegations are thoroughly investigated and can involve police, Title IX, student conduct officials and other legal entities. If and when charges are warranted, or if a student is found to have violated our Code of Student Conduct, such charges and disciplinary measures are filed and pursued aggressively to protect our students.”

Brandon Beane’s reaction to the allegations. He reiterated that the team “thoroughly researched” the allegations against Hairston from 2021. He characterized Hairston as “an immaculate kid,” a sign that the organization still trusts in Hairston’s character even in spite of the lawsuit. Beane mentioned that “it didn’t look like there was anything there at all,” which suggests that Beane had a great deal of confidence in Hairston’s innocence.

Fayette County Sheriff’s Office did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the lawsuit still underway. Additionally, the Lexington Police Department has indicated that they do not have any records matching a sexual assault allegation against Hairston.

Hairston’s agent did not respond on the record to requests for comment regarding the lawsuit. As the case continues to unfold, it is igniting important discussion about how to keep campuses safe. We focus on universities’ inadequate responses to allegations of sexual misconduct between students.
