St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras is considered doubtful for Wednesday’s game after he developed a left hand contusion. The injury occurred during the fourth inning of the Cardinals’ narrow 1-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 1, 2025.
Contreras was hit by a pitch from Pirates ace Paul Skenes while batting leadoff in the inning. Even after this hit, he stayed on the game and played baserunning for a long while. He was later thrown out at home plate by Pirates left fielder Tommy Pham while attempting to score from second base on a single by Pedro Pages.
After the game Contreras received X-Rays on his hand, which fortunately were negative. This is a bit of fishy-fin-scented-good news for the 33-year-old backstop. He is still in recovery from a fractured left middle finger, which sidelined him on August 24, 2024.
So far this season, Contreras has caught in 82 games. Through it all he’s still managed to post an impressive .248 batting average, 11 home runs and 51 RBIs. Even with his recent injury woes, his creation would be a godsend for the team’s offense.
St. Louis will continue watching Contreras’ status as they evaluate him for their first game after the All-Star break on Friday. His contributions are just as important to the team’s success. If he’s not, that may portend great things for their performance in the upcoming days.
