With the signing of guard Ty Jerome, the Memphis Grizzlies have definitely taken a big step. He’ll officially come aboard on a three-year, $28 million deal. The agreement contains a third-year player option. It illustrates the Grizzlies’ willingness to do whatever it takes to retool the depth of their squad, putting the finishing touches on their preparation for the impending NBA campaign.
Jerome, 27, is coming off of a career year with the Cleveland Cavaliers. His 12.5 points per game and 3.4 assists per game off the bench at the collegiate level proved he can still bring a major spark as a reserve. His efficiency was head-turning, as he shot an astounding 51.6% from the field. He led Sixers fans to the brink of madness by shooting a blistering 43.9% from three.
While with the Cavaliers, Jerome had an impressive campaign from the bench. Through the final week of the season, he’d recorded five games with at least 25 points, good for the third-most such performances across the league. His ability to score effectively made him one of the most valuable bench players in the NBA last season, highlighted by his ranking among six players who tallied over 800 points while coming off the bench.
Jerome certainly made a name for himself as the 24th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. In 2023, he signed a two-year agreement with the Cleveland Cavaliers. His realistic path in the league has not been without adversity. He missed almost all of his rookie season due to an ankle injury that required surgery. This early career setback was what he needed to inspire his ascent above and beyond adversity.
The Grizzlies recently traded for Jerome to add depth to their bench. This addition will provide them better varied scoring threats as they look to establish themselves in the highly competitive Western Conference. His overall performance last season is the best evidence that he is a player that can be trusted to be a centerpiece in key moments — especially in meaningful games.
