England’s Jofra Archer, the pace bowler known for his breakout performance in international cricket at the 2019 World Cup, will have to wait a little longer to get back into Test matches. England have named an unchanged side for the second Test against India at Edgbaston. This announcement marks a very long overdue return to the format for Archer. His most recent appearance was in a T20I match against India in late 2021.
Archer leapt onto the international stage in 2019, dazzling a public new to the game with his breathtaking speed and deftness. Unfortunately, the last few years have held final drafts for him as injuries—especially to his back and elbow—have derailed his promising career. These problems have dogged him for close to two years, placing his Test career on indefinite hold. Now, his selection for the England squad represents a new high point on an already varied career. Even so, the team management wants to take their time with his recovery and return. Though he is back after a four-year layoff, it will be a slow re-introduction.
He did not attend Monday’s training session due to a family emergency. This has raised even more questions about his readiness for the rematch against McGregor. Adopting a wait-and-see approach, England have made it clear they won’t be rushed into bringing Archer back to the fold. The unchanged squad suggests that England think their current players are capable of producing the level of performance they need without Archer being in the picture straight away.
Now two key figures in English cricket have come out to call for caution with Archer’s return, former England captain Michael Vaughan and Sussex coach Paul Farbrace. They made it clear that their priority was to make sure he is 100 percent match-fit before returning to the Test stage. He’s had little first-class bowling under his belt of late. Regardless of how on-point their concerns may be, their warnings illustrate the need for a very cautious approach.
England were bound to let Archer go for Sussex’s County Championship game vs Warwickshire. Instead, he’s made the choice to continue with the national team. This decision underscores the faith the England management has in Archer’s potential while recognizing the need for gradual reintroduction into competitive play.
One of his England teammates, Chris Woakes, was impressed by Archer’s determination to play himself back into shape.
“He’s put in some seriously hard yards to get himself back in condition and a physical state to be at his best.” – Chris Woakes
During recent ODIs in England’s build up to the Test matches against India, the issue of workload management became a hot topic. Former Essex captain Ryan ten Doeschate noted that with eight days of recovery since the last Test, decisions will be made based on conditions and workload for the next four games.
“He’s had eight days to recover from the last Test. Given conditions and workload, and how we think we can best manage for the next four games, we haven’t made a call on that.” – Ryan ten Doeschate
As for Archer’s future participation, that remains in the balance. Despite all this, India has so far only guaranteed his inclusion in three of the five Tests. His past performance has set the bar high. Many have faith that given the right circumstances, he can top his 2019 successes.
