Magic Land PG Tyus Jones in $7 Million Deal

The Orlando Magic have officially signed point guard Tyus Jones to a one-year, $7 million contract, enhancing their backcourt ahead of the upcoming season. At only 29 years old, Jones will add plenty of experience and skill to the newly revamped Magic roster. He’ll be playing next to fellow guard Desmond Bane and the ascending prospect Jalen Suggs.

Jones was a 58 game starter for the Phoenix Suns last year. As the team’s bottom line started to crack, so for him did his influence. His first contract with Phoenix was for just one year. Prior to jumping onto the Suns’ roster last offseason, he had one of the best seasons of his career as a starter for the Wizards. In Phoenix, he stepped into a roster loaded with ball-dominant guards. Among them are recent All Star starters like Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.

During his time with the Suns, Jones showcased his shooting ability, having the most accurate season in terms of 3-point shooting. Without a doubt, he found a way to shoot 41.4% from deep on five attempts per game. But even with this shooting efficiency increase, his assists took a dip as he adjusted to his incoming role.

Jones will be an addition to the Magic’s backcourt depth. He brings an excellent mix of veteran leadership and playmaking skills to an already talented back end. He’ll be teaming up with Bane and Suggs. In unison, they’ll combine to make one of the most exciting and youthful trios to play in the Eastern Conference. For the Magic’s front office, they believe this is the first step to cultivating their young core and not sacrificing competitiveness in the process.
