Patrick Reed won his first tournament on the LIV Golf circuit at the LIV Golf Dallas event. He famously won the championship on the strength of a clutch 15-foot birdie putt on the first hole of an exciting four-man playoff. That was the preamble to an extraordinary victory that represented the crowning achievement of Reed’s storied career. It was his first victory since joining the breakaway LIV Golf Series in 2022, coming on home turf in his native Texas.
Starting the final round with a three-shot cushion, Reed struggled immensely as the day wore on. He had a hard time holding on to his lead and would shoot 3-over par for the final round to lose, closing with a 75. This outstanding performance earned him a spot in a playoff against the likes of Louis Oosthuizen, Paul Casey and Jinichiro Kozuma.
Reed’s charge to the 2018 playoffs started after Kozuma failed to make a vital 25-foot birdie try. With the heat turned up, Reed stepped up at crunch time, pouring in a 15-foot birdie putt on the last to finalize his victory.
“I tried to mess it up. After making birdie on the first, I seemed to leave every putt short,” Reed remarked following his win. He knew he was scared, but he performed exquisitely under the stressful circumstances. With this accomplishment came great relief and immense pride for him.
Reed capped off the tournament with a blistering 68 in the final round. Due to Kozuma’s late bogey on the 18th hole, Reed stayed right there in the mix for an opportunity to battle in a playoff. With his victory, Reed captured the overall trophy! With this victory, he moved up to fifth in the points standings and received a “go” ticket to the British Open coming up.
Reflecting on his victory, Reed expressed his heartfelt emotions, stating, “To get my first win here, part of LIV, it means so much to me.” This achievement is prompting a new, transformative chapter in his career. It really goes to show his drive to make it on the LIV Golf circuit.
