Jon Lewis, the former head coach of the England women’s cricket team, has officially left his role at UP Warriorz after three seasons in the Women’s Premier League. The announcement follows a disappointing winter for England, culminating in their early exit from the T20 World Cup and a significant loss in the Ashes series.
At 49, Lewis juggled his national team obligations with the UP Warriorz. Under his leadership, the UP Warriorz squad showcased remarkable progress. On the field, they became only the second team to make it through the knockouts in the inaugural season of the WPL. In a recent 4-year period, they placed 4th one year and 5th the next. This steep drop-off in performance was undoubtedly a factor in his departure.
Lewis expressed optimism about the tournament’s potential, stating that he expected it to offer “fascinating insight into the depth of cricket in India.” His understanding of the local game immediately raised the team’s visibility. Unfortunately, the results on the ground haven’t lived up to the promise. His tenure with England was marked by challenges, including a disappointing group stage exit at the T20 World Cup and a staggering 16-0 Ashes defeat in Australia.
Lewis also endured the mounting pressures of leading a prominent national team. Comically enough, during this time he was coaching in an international league, increasing the strain on him. His dismissal from the England position was a reaction to the squad’s disappointing displays under his tenure. The unfortunate combination of these factors ultimately forced his exit from UP Warriorz.
