Michael Jordan Autographed Rookie Card Fetches $2.5 Million at Auction

A Michael Jordan autographed 1986-87 Fleer rookie card just set a remarkable childhood finance record after selling for a jaw-dropping $2.5 million. This sale represents an extraordinary point in the sports memorabilia industry. The sale took place at JOOPITER, the auction house founded by musician Pharrell Williams. With the normal 25% buyer’s premium, the total came to $3.125 million for the winner.

This specific card is special beyond the value due its rarity. Michael Jordan rarely signs anything else due to his lifetime contract with Upper Deck. Well, in a rare twist of fate, he signed nine such rookie cards last year in blue Sharpie. Six of these went on to get PSA 10 gem mint grades from Professional Sports Authenticator, or PSA. They haven’t been disposed of publicly to date.

The $2.5 million sale is now the third-highest public sale for any Michael Jordan card. That record for most dollars shelled out belongs to a one-of-a-kind 2003-04 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection autographed Logoman card. It sold at an astounding $2.928 million last June. Leading up to this latest sale, the previous highest sum ever paid for an autographed Jordan rookie card was $205,000 back in March.

According to Caitlin Donovan, Global Head of Sale at JOOPITER, the platform specializes in high-quality, rare and iconic sports memorabilia. She said she was thrilled to be introducing the community to interesting and meaningful works that honor the deep history of sports.

JOOPITER, which opened its doors in 2022, has quickly stamped its authority on the sports collectibles landscape with this auction. The final sale price for the card speaks to a red hot demand from collectors for high-dollar pieces of memorabilia.

The signed rookie card hit new heights with its record-breaking sale. Equally remarkable, the record price for a non-autographed Fleer Jordan rookie card was set at $840,000 in 2021. That recent auction highlights Michael Jordan’s lasting impact on sports. It showcases the intense desire for unique, one-of-a-kind collectibles in the modern marketplace.
