Warren Deutrom, the legendary chief executive of Cricket Ireland, has just dropped a bombshell. While he will be leaving at the end of August, thus ending an inspirational 19-year run, his impact and vision will endure. Deutrom’s departure will bring the end of an era. Bridges has been at the heart of the growth of Irish cricket, including supervising landmark moments such as the International Cricket Council (ICC) granting them Test status in 2017.
Deutrom arrives with more than three decades of experience in cricket administration under his belt. He’s served in senior roles with the ICC before, and with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). His deep experience has had a profound impact on the world of cricket in Ireland. As such, some historic changes are happening at this very moment.
Under Deutrom’s leadership, one of the most ambitious projects anywhere continues to take shape. They’re just finishing the construction of a new 4,000-seater cricket stadium in Dublin. This facility is due to be finished in time for Ireland to co-host the 2030 T20 World Cup alongside neighbours England and Wales. For the game in the nation, this accomplishment will mark a huge leap in progress. These ongoing initiatives are a testament to Deutrom’s dedication towards developing the game and building an ever-brightening future for Irish cricket.
As he gets ready to step down from his post soon, Deutrom said he’s proud of the things they’ve been able to accomplish during that time. He specifically highlighted the awarding of Test status as “the most significant achievement I’ll look back on with pride.” His reflections included fond memories of the people he has worked with, stating, “While the absolute highlights of the role are too numerous to mention, the most powerful memories I’ll take with me are of our Irish cricket family – the good people, the kind people, the mentors, the taskmasters, the wonderful colleagues, and the countless friends I am privileged to have made along the way.”
Brian MacNeice, chair of Cricket Ireland, commended Deutrom’s contributions, praising his “skill, dedication, enthusiasm and selflessness.” MacNeice recognized how much Deutrom’s leadership and vision have contributed to the growth and success of cricket in Ireland.
In anticipation of Deutrom’s departure, Cricket Ireland is set to start a “comprehensive and thorough” recruitment process to find his successor. The organization aims to continue building on the foundations laid during his leadership and ensure that Irish cricket remains on an upward trajectory.
While Deutrom is preparing for his departure, he won’t be retreating just yet. With direct control over the preparations for the T20 World Cup at home in 2026, he will ensure that his final few months with Cricket Ireland are full of development and cooperation.
