Richard Bland, the 52-year-old professional golfer, has made the decision to forgo defending his title at the U.S. Senior Open. Instead, he’ll concentrate on manning his post at the third rank of LIV Golf’s 14-event schedule. Bland made headlines after posting to social media to announce his commitment. To qualify for the final phase, he’ll have to finish as one of the top 24 players, thus guaranteeing his selection to captain Martin Kaymer’s Cleeks team.
Bland’s selection is especially timely, given his recent accolades and situation. He really first rose to national prominence in 2021. The following year he won the British Masters, becoming the DP World Tour’s oldest debut winner at 48. That win, his first at this level, served as a poignant reminder of his bounce-back ability and quality, a resilient act from a battle-hardened veteran.
Unsure of his immediate future, Bland ran into bad luck that would affect his entry in future tournaments. Denial of entry into this year’s 2023 Senior Open is due to unpaid fines from the European Tour. Perhaps that’s why this setback spurred him to move to LIV Golf. The 2025 Senior Open is scheduled to be played at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Bland won’t be returning to defend his championship title.
Aside from everything else he’s achieved, Bland just added another title to his name as the current winner of the 2024 Senior PGA Championship. The significance of this win was two-fold: it further cemented his status as the preeminent player in senior golf. It also landed him qualification for the Senior U.S. Open. At Newport Country Club, he beat Hiroyuki Fujita in a six-hole playoff to win the Senior U.S. Open Championship.
Bland’s relocation to LIV Golf is the latest example of a historic sea change in professional golf. Players are already on the lookout for new opportunities and more sustainable formats that fit their career aspirations. Bland signs on to LIV’s schedule to increase his competitive firepower. Equally important, though, he wants to foster a better team atmosphere with Kaymer at the helm.
As Bland looks ahead to more LIV Golf events, his aim is still to play the best golf possible despite finding himself in this newfound state of limbo. Beyond tactical adjustments on the ground, his counterinsurgency pivot is emblematic of an overarching strategic choice. It addresses the bombardment of the world of professional golf, where players are looking to explore different paths to prosperity.
