In a fiery clash at Edgbaston, Warwickshire battled bravely to escape the follow-on. They did, just about, on the third day of their County Championship match with Somerset. With only three wickets left in hand, the team was still 32 runs away from the follow-on score of 349. Warwickshire’s batters dug in, but the pressure proved too much. Ultimately, they were bowled out for 351, well under Somerset’s mammoth first innings score of 498.
Somerset’s batting clinic in the first day and a half proved just how much control they had over the game. Opener Tom Lammonby and wicketkeeper James Rew shared an explosive partnership of 83 runs in just 67 balls. Lammonby batted quite aggressively considering the situation until he finally hoisted Corey Rocchiccioli to mid-wicket, where his innings came to a close. Yet, this partnership provided a solid platform for Somerset’s authoritative total.
In Warwickshire’s second innings, it was Alex Davies who got them off to a flying start with a superb knock of 78 from 186 balls. Sam Hain supported him, hitting 78 runs. Back-up wicketkeeper Tom Latham played a good hand with the bat, going 65 runs on the scoreboard. Warwickshire had no answer to the firepower of Somerset’s bowling line-up, led by the ever-impressive Craig Overton. Overton achieved the remarkable feat of taking four wickets for just 61 runs.
The match took a pivotal turn when Corey Rocchiccioli responded aggressively with a quick-fire 28 runs from just 31 balls. His grafting indeed came as a great help for Warwickshire in closing in on the follow-on target. Aggressive stroke play from Rocchiccioli sparked a comeback. He had produced a vital pull shot for six off Migael Pretorius which took Warwickshire to within ten runs of surviving the follow-on.
In a gallant stroke, Jacob Bethell was promoted to come in at four for Warwickshire. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t to last long as he bottom-edged a horrible looking pull shot off Overton for 37. The threat of the follow on loomed large on Warwickshire and this only increased as they lost their 5th wicket on 31.
The final moments of Warwickshire’s innings witnessed Ethan Bamber reverse-sweeping left-arm spinner Jack Leach for four runs, successfully averting the follow-on and giving his team a glimmer of hope in a challenging situation. Nevertheless, with Somerset’s substantial first-innings lead and effective bowling attack, Warwickshire’s path forward appears steep.
