Former England Cricketer David “Syd” Lawrence Passes Away at 61

David “Syd” Lawrence, the former fast bowler who dazzled for England and Gloucestershire, has passed away due to an undisclosed illness at the age of 61. His death is a shocking loss to the cricketing world. He was known for his incredible artistry on the field and his fiery crusade off of it. Lawrence’s 16-year career introduced wholesome changes to the sport, encouraging great excellence from most of his teammates. He was a groundbreaker, becoming the first black cricketer born in Britain to play for England.

Lawrence went on to make his first-class debut for Gloucestershire in 1981 and quickly became one of cricket’s most intimidating prospects. In his long career, he ended up collecting 625 wickets in 280 matches overall, proof of his incredible skill and grit. He played five Test matches for England, including a memorable debut against Sri Lanka at Lord’s in 1988, where he took three wickets. His performance only got better, with the high point of 14 wickets in three Tests in 1991 being a blazing highlight.

Lawrence thrilled fans with his boisterous thunderous run-up and fearsome bowling style. His energy and enthusiasm for the game were contagious. He bagged 477 wickets at a remarkable average of 31.27 in his 170-match long first-class career. His pièce de résistance came when he took 7/47 against Warwickshire. His nickname “Syd” is from the British bandleader Syd Lawrence. As his new family name indicates, this energetic personality fits him like a glove, on-field and off.

Earlier this month, Lawrence received the honor of being appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his efforts in raising awareness and funds for motor neurone disease (MND), a condition he was diagnosed with last year. His commitment to this cause was further testament to his resilience and a reflection of his wish to inspire and uplift others.

Richard Thompson, chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) even called out Lawrence positive influence on his sport. He stated, “As a fast bowler, he thrilled crowds with his pace and passion. As a leader and advocate, he broke barriers and inspired change, becoming a powerful voice for inclusion and representation in our sport.”

Lawrence’s legacy extends beyond his impressive statistics. Though he was fierce on the field, he was respected for his geniality and affability away from the diamond. Jonathan Agnew, a close friend and former RFU chairman, commented on his sadness after hearing the news of their close relationship. He described Lawrence as “an intimidating sight but with a warm heart and a great sense of humour.” Agnew remembered that when Lawrence came to town, he could just light up a room with his laughter, charisma, smiles and stories.

“Even in the face of his illness, David showed extraordinary strength and dignity, continuing to uplift others with his resilience and spirit. He leaves behind a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who love cricket.” – Richard Thompson

Lawrence’s family expressed pride in his tenacity, stating, “A proud Gloucestershire man, Syd took on every challenge with everything he could and his final contest with MND was no different.” It was his courage in facing that illness, his deep compassion and love, even when facing death, that inspired all who knew him.

In addition to his cricketing achievements, Lawrence authored an autobiography titled “In Syd’s Voice – The Extraordinary Life of Syd Lawrence,” which reflects on his life both in cricket and beyond. His contributions to the sport have been recognized widely, with many describing him as “a pioneer, a mentor, and a symbol of resilience.”

Phil Tufnell, another prominent figure in cricket, noted, “He was a sight to behold coming in with the ball in his hand,” highlighting Lawrence’s impressive presence on the field.

David “Syd” Lawrence is survived by his beloved wife Gaynor. He leaves behind their son, Buster, who played professional rugby union. His passing will be sorely felt by the sporting community and everyone else. His accomplishments will forever be held dear by players, fans, and friends alike. His legendary indomitable will is what we must remember was a way of life for him.
