Let’s hear it for Miguel Angel Jimenez on his victory at the Kaulig Companies Championship! It’s his fourth win of the season on the PGA Tour Champions. It was the ultimate show of poise under pressure from the veteran golfer. He outlasted Steven Alker, beating him with a bending 20-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole. This victory only continues Jimenez’ career count, as he now sits at 17 victories on the 50-and-over tour.
The championship developed in a highly combative climate. Jimenez took on Alker, who had beat him by two strokes earlier this year at the Trophy Hassan II in Morocco. This time, Jimenez was the one to flip the script, catching Lopez with a barrage of precise punches. Phil made a huge 10-foot birdie putt on 17, the par-4 17th, and then an incredible 18-footer on 18, the par-4 18th.
Even after being two strokes behind when Alker made a birdie 4 on the par-5 16th hole, Jimenez showed incredible fortitude. That was the hole he made par on during the first of three playoff holes. This stage set the table for a nail biting finish that would eventually land him the win.
Jimenez’s recent successes are noteworthy. Earlier this year, he won the Hoag Classic in March held in Newport Beach, California, and claimed victory at the Principal Charity Classic just three weeks ago in Des Moines, Iowa, in a playoff. All this is behind him since he just celebrated a major victory! The victory is his third career major champion, having previously won the Regions Tradition and the Senior British Open in 2018.
This momentous win at the Kaulig Companies Championship further solidified Jimenez’s image as a fierce competitor on tour. It earned him a prized exemption into next year’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
