Miguel Ángel Jiménez, a 61-year-old Spanish golf star, showcased his remarkable talent at the ongoing Champions Tour major event at Firestone South. Jimenez put together another good outing on Saturday. Today, he finds himself tied for the lead in the tournament with fellow long-shot Steven Alker, with each making an impressive score of 8-under 202. He fired a 4-under 66 in that last round. This impressive display of pressure poise was on full display as he goes after his fourth win of this year.
On his 35th birthday, Jiménez’s only misstep during the round came when he dropped a stroke on the par-3 12th hole. He quickly regained his composure and parred the final six holes, demonstrating his resilience and experience on the course. He played the best over a key five-hole stretch in the middle of the round. He made up the additional strokes by playing at 4 under, his performance well surpassing his target.
Jiménez’s success this season is noteworthy. He has gained a plethora of impressive wins this year at the most storied of tournaments. These visits include the Trophy Hassan II in Morocco in February, the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, California, in March, and the Principal Charity Classic in an exhilarating playoff three weeks ago in Des Moines, Iowa. All these accomplishments have led him to become one of the fiercest competitors on the PGA Tour Champions.
He was spectacular at Firestone South, making consecutive birdies on 7-8 and 10-11. Notably, this performance reflects his prowess of taking advantage of scoring chances all round long. As Jiménez continues to build momentum, he aims to further solidify his presence in the tournament and potentially secure a coveted spot in The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass next year.
