Rangers Prepare for Champions League Qualifying Amid Squad Changes

Russell Martin became Rangers’ new gaffer on June 5. He is anticipating a very competitive summer, as he readies his team for the increased competition coming from Europe. That first big test is right around the corner. With a second round Champions League qualifying tie on July 22 against Panathinaikos coming up, Martin is keen to boost his squad with some new signings.

So far this summer, the club has been bolstering the midfield, including bringing in 22-year-old midfielder Lyall Cameron. His eventual transfer agreement was struck in February of this year. The squad is expected to get back to training on Monday. Martin continues to emphasise the importance of building up the squad’s quality and depth before their debut against the Greeks.

Strengthening the Squad

Russell Martin himself admits there’s still a long way to go with this squad, especially when it comes to strength in depth. He expressed his commitment to enhancing the group before the European match, stating, “Everyone’s working extremely hard, that’s what the bulk of the work has been in the last week or so – identifying character and talent we want in the building which can add to us and add to the group and add culturally and in performance.”

The need for these signings is urgent as evidenced by these examples. Martin is keen to get a number of fresh new faces on the team before they meet Panathinaikos. He conveyed optimism about potential signings, saying, “I think we’ll have a few before the European game,” though he remained uncertain about the exact number.

Cyril Dessers, a player who has been heavily linked with a move away from Ibrox, remains a focal point of discussion. AEK Athens are looking to sign Martin on a permanent deal. Meanwhile, he wants Dessers to still be in the mix when training action resumes in earnest.

“The updates will come as and when they’re actually real. At the minute, I’m expecting Cyril to return on Monday and I’m excited to work with him,” – Russell Martin

Injury Updates and Expectations

Beyond who they might sign Martin gave a few injury updates on Steelers players. With any luck, John Souttar will be back in time for the double-header against Panathinaikos. He had a small procedure done in pre-season, but he’s now getting back into the fold. That said, Martin allayed fears by confirming his expectation that Souttar will be ready for the important decider.

Cyril Dessers will rejoin full training on Monday. This piece of news adds to the growing mystery surrounding his long term future at the club. This heady mix of injuries and transfer speculation makes for a toxic environment as supporters impatiently await news as to what kind of squad we’ll have.

Fans Demand Reinforcements

Ex-Rangers striker Kris Boyd has sounded alarms over the club’s state at present. He’s called for new arrivals urgently to help reinforce the squad. Boyd remarked on Martin’s clear communication and vision for the team but noted that fans are already questioning the lack of new players. He stated, “There’s one thing having that, but they need to get players in and Rangers fans are already beginning to ask ‘where are the players?’”

Boyd stressed the importance of making sure the Rangers are on an equal footing as their historic rival, Celtic. He stressed that a large gap in experience still exists over an entire season. He said getting better in this area is the key to Rangers success in the future and in the immediate.
