Both players owned the course at Firestone South. Petrovic lit it up with a dream round of 4-under 66, joining Alker and Gonzalez at a combined 5-under 135 through 36 holes.
The Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio is the third major of the year on the PGA Tour Champions. It certainly attracts the strongest field of talent in senior golf. Petrovic’s back nine was punctuated by a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole, a testament to Petrovic’s ability to perform in the clutch. Kiwi Alker, whose mother was born in Omaha, put on a dazzling show and finished with a 66. This huge win leaves him still very much in the race.
Argentine golfer Ricardo Gonzalez helped keep the pressure cooker going, matching Palmer with a 68 to stay firmly in the hunt. Ángel Cabrera continued to exhibit the immense talent that once brought him a Masters victory, shooting 68 and ending the day at 1 under. He won two of the five majors this year, saying the Regions Tradition in May and the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional in June.
Miguel Angel Jiménez gave the best individual round, a 66. He ended up winning by a single stroke. Freddie Jacobson was the last in the notable category with a 67, leaving him 3 under for the tourney.
Among those getting ready for this year’s U.S. Senior Open to be held in Colorado are these players. The Kaulig Companies Championship is their most important test of skill and endurance. The winner of this storied tournament goes on to receive a highly-prized invitation to The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass next year. That makes this year’s competition all the more meaningful!
