Florian Wirtz, a creative 22-year-old dynamo of a playmaker from Germany, appears to be set on a record-breaking transfer to Liverpool. He now plays for Bayer Leverkusen. The transfer is the equivalent of £116.5 million (€137.5 million). It features a £100 million base fee along with up to £16.5 million in possible add-ons. If finalized, this deal will shatter the British record. It will break Chelsea’s 2023 record purchase of Moises Caicedo, which was £115 million.
Wirtz’s trip to the UK started specifically on Thursday. He made the trip to Liverpool’s training ground on Friday morning to complete his move. He’s passed the first half of his medical exam already, with the second half later today. Once the deal goes through Wirtz will put pen to paper on a five-year deal with Liverpool. This contract ensures him a base salary of £195,000 a week, escalating to £245,000 depending on performance-related bonuses.
The player had allegedly pushed for the move to Merseyside rather than for a transfer to Bayern Munich. This decision in itself illustrates his dedication to Liverpool’s long-term project. At the same time, Manchester City pulled out of the tug-of-war, decrying the spiraling fees involved with the transfer bundle.
As a creative playmaker, Wirtz has already succeeded in showing out on the big stage, creating enticing parallels that have drawn Liverpool to the young talent. His expected arrival should get the team’s offensive firepower rolling again at a torrid pace.
