Cricket Shubman Gill has stepped into key role for India as new Test team captain. He is hellbent on taking his team to a first ever Test series victory over England, convinced such a feat would be more glorious than winning the Indian Premier League (IPL). The five-Test series opens in Leeds on Friday. This is turning into an enormous opportunity for Gill to bag his maiden Test series victory on English soil and guide the Indian side to its first in 16 years.
With Gill at the helm, India will be looking to restore their past glories in England. They haven’t done this amazing thing since 2007, when they won the series 1-0. That was the position prior to last series when India gained a 2-1 lead. After a year-long development process, they lost the finale. FIVE TEST SERIES, FOUR SKIPPERS As he prepares for his first series as captain, Gill understood the gravity of the challenge before him.
“I have spoken to many senior players, including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma,” Gill noted. You don’t get many chances as a Skipper to get to England, possibly two. If you happen to be the very best of your generation, tow. The IPL is an annual blessing that rolls around, you’re lucky enough to have a shot at participating in it.
Gill, 25, is set to become the new captain of the Test side. He assumes this position after Rohit Sharma declared his retirement from Test cricket last month. He does not downplay the privilege of captaining the national side, referring to it as “the biggest honour you could get.” He looks back at his experiences in the last Test series versus England, which was played in India. He goes on to call it one of the greatest series he’s ever been a part of.
The Test series we went and toured against England on home soil in India was fantastic. It ranks in the top 3 of the best things I ever done! The series scorecard was 4 – 1 but the number did not do full justice to how much this series was an indictment on our careers,” he said.
As captain, Gill will don the role of the team’s number four batsman – the position most recently occupied by Virat Kohli. His leadership comes at an important time for Indian cricket. The young and experienced team combined is excited to put its talents on the international stage.
