Add to that the emergence of Jaxson Dart, another rookie quarterback for the New York Giants making a name for himself. He opened with a bang during early spring minicamp, too! Selected as the 25th pick in this year’s draft, Dart has been working diligently with the second-team offense, showcasing his skills and adaptability in learning the Giants’ system.
Dart, who began the year on the third team, rose up the depth chart in short order, playing behind veteran quarterback Russell Wilson. He’s not only outplayed his talented rookie counterpart, he’s passed experienced guys Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito on the depth chart. During this transition, he has had opportunities to train under experienced professionals and learn the most effective practices.
On the third and final day of minicamp practice, Dart was given some first-team opportunities and proved he could be a game-changer on his very first snap. He showed great footwork as he danced around in the pocket. Then, he threw a bomb deep touchdown pass to undrafted wide receiver Dalen Cambre, who bowled a pretty catch in the right corner of the end zone. This moment closed the book on a whirlwind spring for the newcomer. Most importantly, it left a great impression on the coaches as well as his future teammates.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll has been making a point to keep an eye on Dart’s advancement all weekend during the minicamp.
“Well, it’s good to get him in with the ones. There’s usually a level of anxiety at times for young players when they get thrown into the mix,” – Brian Daboll
Daboll said he was happy with Dart’s performance, pointing out he’s aced every initial test this spring. Our new quarterback has fit right in, Manziel and the coach reiterated. He has flashed top-level IQ and field awareness, along with a competitive, aggressive disposition.
“It’s really good to have Russ and Jameis and even Tommy because Tommy has been in this system for a few years here. Kind of the head statesman in terms of that with all the adjustments that take place and the calls. He’s fit right in with those guys. He’s smart, aggressive with the football, which I like. And then the true test will be once we start with live hitting and preseason games and things like that. He’s progressed since he’s been here. … He’s made improvement.” – Brian Daboll
Jameis Winston weighed in on Dart’s burgeoning talent after witnessing the impressive touchdown pass, stating that “all touchdowns are loved,” highlighting the positive atmosphere surrounding the rookie’s achievements.
