Breece Hall, the promising running back for the New York Jets, is setting his sights high as he prepares for the upcoming season. Even after posting career lows in rushing yards per game and yards per carry last season, Hall isn’t worried. He’s more committed than ever to returning and returning big. Now he’s hellbent on proving that he’s worth it. His team is all about trying to get big, long-term contract extensions done for cornerstone players including Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson.
The luck of Hall’s draw has gotten a lot more interesting. He now forms one of the best backfield trios in the country with fellow teammates Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis. While Hall considers himself a three-down back who is “second-to-none to a lot of backs in the league,” he acknowledges that sharing carries may impact his statistics this season.
I believe in what I’m doing, I believe in what I’m capable of, I know the potential I have, but potential can only take you so far. I do not want to be a work in progress,” Hall announced. He is hungry to prove he can do more, be more and fortify his seat at the table. His competitive nature pushes him to a daily litmus test of whether or not he’s performing and looking for that internal motivation to do better.
That was a tough season for Hall, as his 54.8 rushing yards per game was the worst of his pro career. Yet, he doesn’t attribute his difficulties to any specific source. Instead, he thinks of these as important stops along the way on a long path toward whatever might come next, something better. He noted that new head coach Aaron Glenn puts a premium on one-on-one meetings with players. By taking this approach, you encourage an environment of transparent communication and good faith.
Glenn recently spoke to veteran linebacker C.J. Mosley over lunch, as the two discussed fostering the key ingredient to a successful NFL locker room. He reflected on the tension he always hopes to walk as a coach.
“I know when to push, I know when to hold back, and I do know when it’s time to have a little fun,” Glenn commented about his coaching philosophy.
Looking back on the team’s chemistry and camaraderie today, there’s a distinct divide. He feels like there’s for sure “a hole in the wall” without the player to be named. This feeling of togetherness extends to the locker room as well, with teammates supporting one another in their shared goal of success together.
Jermaine Johnson, another key leader on the Jets, emphasized the importance of accountability and the ‘we’ over ‘me’. “To me, that’s them lifting their end of the couch,” Johnson said about fellow players contributing to the team’s goals. He concluded, “Now it’s my turn to raise my side of the couch!” This declaration calls attention to the discipline, skill and passion that every participant involved must uphold while chasing the apex of success.
The enthusiasm surrounding Hall’s return from injury is obvious, especially with the big man’s goals for 2023 at such a lofty level. We’ve seen that there was a really positive culture, that he definitely loved to compete with his teammates. He hopes their diligence allows for fun moments on the field.
I think it’s going to be fun. There’s smiles to be had, smiles to be earned out there, competition to be had out there. I’m really excited about it,” Gardner said in a recent press call.
So, as the Jets get ready for what’s to come, it’s Hall’s spirit and resolve that truly shines. He is prepared to tackle the challenge of sharing the backfield while pursuing individual greatness.
