J.J. Spaun Claims First Major Title at U.S. Open

On Sunday, J.J. Spaun wrote his own history, winning the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. This victory was his first professional championship title. The 34-year-old golfer finished with a score of 1-under 279, becoming the only player to complete the tournament under par. Spaun rose to the occasion with a brilliant, even-par 70 on Sunday. He proved he was steeled to the task by going three under on the back nine.

American Sam Burns, who began the day one-shot clear of Spaun, saw the 33-year-old from Los Angeles suffer a brutal opening. He recorded bogeys on five of his opening six holes and lost ground by as much as four shots. Following an errant tee shot on the short par-4 17th hole, he showed a rare cool disposition. On the par 5, with a spectacular 309-yard rope of a drive, he was on the green and took the outright lead at even par.

The stunning conclusion happened on the 18th green. On No. 18, Spaun sank a jaw-dropping 64½-foot birdie putt to cap off a two-stroke victory over Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre. This clutch play, which won the match, underscored Spaun’s talents and grit in pressure-packed moments.

As such, thanks to this victory Spaun will take home a career-best $4.3 million, a huge boost to his position in the world of professional golf. He is currently 25th in the Official World Golf Ranking. Two years ago, he earned his only PGA Tour victory at the 2022 Valero Texas Open.

Spaun’s success is both a rewarding result of his grit and expertise in a deeply competitive arena. He is the first U.S. Open winner to begin his final round with three consecutive holes over par, showcasing his ability to overcome adversity and emerge victorious under pressure.
