Carlota Ciganda applauded her winner’s victory march during Sunday’s Meijer LPGA Classic. This win was her first overall on the LPGA Tour in more than eight-and-a-half years. The Spaniard led wire-to-wire and finished at 16-under 272, a whopping 10 under par for her final 54 holes. This marked her first victory since taking the week of the U.S.
Now onto Ciganda, who did everything but win, including a steaming final round of 5 under 67. It was her fourth-straight round in the 60s for the event. Her two birdies on the final two holes turned the tide in the match. With this stellar performance, she built her lead and set herself up to win. On the par-4 17th hole, Ciganda produced this breathtaking approach. It took one hop, then landed a foot from the hole, leaving her with an easy tap-in birdie. She finished it off with a confident 4-foot comebacker on the par-5 18th hole to secure her first win.
With the win, Ciganda secured her first victory since the 2016 Lorena Ochoa Invitational. This victory ends an overall drought of 8 years, 7 months, and 2 days that is quite extraordinary! With this one she’s now the proud owner of three LPGA Tour triumphs. On top of that, she has taken eight triumphs on the Ladies European Tour, most recently in December at the Spanish Women’s Open.
Ciganda expressed her joy following the win, stating, “It feels amazing, obviously, after all these years.”
It has fast become a favorite stop for players and fans at Meijer LPGA Classic. Lexi Thompson, another star golfer who competed in the tournament, lauded the support for women’s golf demonstrated by the spectators.
“Fans are amazing and come out and support women’s golf and that’s what we want.” – Lexi Thompson
Here’s how Ciganda recalls her underdog trip back to the winner’s circle. She represents her extraordinary artistry, as well as the grit she’s displayed, handily breaking through adversity over the decades. Her victory at this top-level international competition is another indication of how serious she is about becoming the best female golfer in the world one day.
