Bane Joins Magic in Major Trade with Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies have pulled off a stunning and surprising coup by trading 26-year-old sharpshooter Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic. Not only does this blockbuster deal change the immediate landscapes of both teams, but it figures to change the landscapes of their respective futures. Bane really elevated his profile because of these absurd shooting numbers. He started the season off averaging 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists over 69 games last season.

Even aside from Bane’s stellar numbers, he is emerging as a key figure for Memphis. Ever since he entered the league in 2020, he’s hit 800 three-pointers. He’s maintained a Maestro-like 40% shooting percentage from deep. He’s just plain good at the catch-and-shoot game. It’s no wonder, as he’s shot a highly impressive 43.2% from deep over the last five seasons. Bane is among an elite group of just three NBA players who have achieved both 800 made three-pointers and a 40% shooting percentage since he began his career.

In addition to receiving Bane, the Grizzlies will get a few appealing assets from the Magic. The agreement includes the right to swap first-round picks in 2025, with the No. 16 pick. It involves Phoenix’s first-round pick in 2026 and unprotected first-round picks for 2028 and 2030. One lightly protected swap of picks in 2029 is included.

Orlando’s interest in acquiring Bane makes sense as they try to add steadying presences around their two stars. They have re-inserted third-year, 25-year-old guard Cole Anthony into the starting fold as well. Last year, the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 9.4 points, 3 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 67 games. Anthony’s passing and court vision should provide a nice counterbalance to Bane’s scoring prowess as they work to develop a more competitive roster.

To shore up their depth, the Magic picked up crafty vet Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. In addition, the 32-year-old averaged 8.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists last season over 77 games with the Magic. Caldwell-Pope comes into the league with a ton of experience. He has had the distinct honor to celebrate victories with two championship-winning teams—the Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets. Over his 19 years in the league, he has suited up for 912 games with the Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic and Washington Wizards. He’s averaging an impressive 11.2 ppg, 3 rpg, 1.8 apg.

Bane’s inclusion might be the deciding factor that helps turn the tide for the Magic’s long-dismal future. His scoring prowess and veteran know-how will be essential as the team looks to move up the tables in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference. You can bet the Grizzlies will be looking to maximize their haul of draft picks acquired to rebuild for future success.
