Lexi Thompson had a good chance to make history for women this past weekend at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Coming down to the final stretch, she was only one stroke behind the leaders. It’s been almost a year since her gut wrenching playoff loss at Blythefield Country Club. It’s the same corner, in fact, where she first celebrated her 2015 election win triumph. Regardless of how the tournament played out, Thompson proved herself as a competitor—adapting and overcoming obstacles on a difficult course.
Thompson capped her day—and with given scorecard calculations—her tournament, with a three-under-par 69, good for low total of the week at seven under. She got to that remarkable score by closing with birdies on three of her last four holes playing in tricky afternoon winds. Her drive to take back her title at Blythefield was evident. She was constantly on the attack, fighting to remain in striking distance of the stage leaders.
Karis Davidson proved to be one of the early leaders. She shot 70, with notable birdies on the par-4 16th and par-5 18th. Carlota Ciganda and Hye-Jin Choi both proved their class with rounds of 67. Escaping just enough, Celine Boutier kept the pressure on, carding the low round of the day with a 68. Each of these players showcased their specific talents, all of them helping create a close and competitive leaderboard.
The fresh leaderboard featured a number of players T7 at seven under. Included in that group were Nanna Koerstz Madsen, Amanda Doherty, Bronte Law and Minjee Lee. Their remarkable performances fueled the competitive spirit of the tournament while they competed to reach first place.
“Some days are harder than others and we get frustrated, but at the end of the day it is just golf.” – Lexi Thompson
One Davidson looked back on her historic round with pride, despite all the challenges that came with the day.
Ciganda highlighted how important it is to play well in the weeks heading into a major championship.
“Was a bit of a grind, and nice to get the couple birdies at the end.” – Karis Davidson
Thompson applauded the golf course’s overall condition, as that is extremely important to golfers.
“Coming here the week before a major obviously gives you confidence for playing next week.” – Carlota Ciganda
Looking ahead to national competition over the weekend, Thompson’s experience is key. That same determination will be important as she seeks to defend her title at the Meijer LPGA Classic. With several strong competitors in contention, fans can expect an exciting finish as they navigate the final rounds.
