Rory McIlroy Reflects on Average Performance at Oakmont

Rory McIlroy expressed mixed feelings about his performance at the U.S. Open after a challenging round at Oakmont Country Club. He strolled up to his ball, deep in the right rough of the 18th fairway. To accommodate that burden placed on them, with a sigh Mr. Even though he made the cut on Friday, once his final round was done, McIlroy didn’t know how much he wanted to keep playing over the weekend.

In his first media availability since the start of the tournament, McIlroy looked back on his impressive play. Last week at the RBC Canadian Open, he fired a 71 and 78 for automatic cut. A month prior, he had blissfully tied for 47th at the year’s first major, the PGA Championship. It hasn’t been suppertime for the Northern Irishman of late, due in part to problems with his driver at Quail Hollow.

Just days before the U.S. Open, McIlroy took a courageous stand. He decided to revert back to an older model Taylormade driver that he had used at Masters for his win. I was really inspired with his pride and satisfaction with his achievement in the tournament. He has been so consistent on the fairways — hitting 55 percent of them through three rounds, which is a little above the field average. He had an awful week with his approach game, losing almost a full stroke to the field.

“I’m hoping to play better but I didn’t,” McIlroy remarked, highlighting his disappointment in not achieving the desired results. He shot a 74 on Saturday, leaving him at 10-over for the week. Of course on Friday, he was truly on fire! He punched his ticket for weekend play with two birdies over his last four holes.

Even with that kind of play, McIlroy said afterwards that he could have no motivation to go on in the event. “I was sort of thinking, ‘Do I really want two more days here or not?’” he said. His honesty laid bare the alienation he felt as he worked his way through an unimaginably awful week.

McIlroy has a history of interacting with the media. He’s made a conscious decision to cut back on his availability. “I’ve been totally available for the last few years,” he stated. “It’s more a frustration with you guys.” This decision comes on the heels of a major outcry over a rules infraction committed by his driver. The USGA lab testing showed that this driver was nonconforming. After this information became leaked last time, he refused to talk to reporters.

“Hopefully a round in under four and a half hours,” he said, indicating his eagerness to wrap up an arduous week.
