Sam Burns leading the 2025 master’s tournament. He managed to get through the second round without so much as a birdie, ultimately shooting a record-setting 39 strokes over par. His outstanding play put him front of the field as the players were put through unprecedented challenges in the progression of the tournament.
The second round of play saw a suspension at 8:15 p.m. on Friday due to inclement weather conditions. This disruption threw thousands of competitors into chaos, but it allowed for a clean slate when play resumed early Saturday morning. With all those hurdles in place, Burns definitely made himself stand out during this time, as he worked to separate himself from the pack.
Burns wasn’t the only impressive player today. Three others shot sub-par rounds, demonstrating that even with the stops and starts, the spirit of competition was still fierce. That resilience of spirit is breathtaking in these performances. That bodes well for an unpredictable NCAA tournament to come as the three riders adjust to the game’s constantly shifting sails.
The 2025 tournament has already been a crucible of both talent and improvisation. In particular, as players adapted to the fluctuating conditions, the ones that rose to the top were players that performed well strategically and mentally. The front runners used the early Saturday morning restart to reassess and reorganize. It all made for an incredible and blistering second half of the tournament.
With Burns understandably fired up, everyone in golf is excited to see what the final three rounds will bring. No doubt skillful play can make a difference, but surprises can as well. Each hole is important to everyone as they all face these tests.
