Steven Pressley has been appointed as the new head coach of Dundee Football Club, marking his return to management after a six-year hiatus. The announcement comes hot on the heels of Tony Docherty’s exit. He was sacked after finishing 10th in the Scottish Premiership, even though he guided his club to a top-six finish just one season before.
Pressley’s managerial experience is deep with the former Chief of Staff to Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. His target this season is to get Dundee challenging for a top-six finish again. He has had successful spells in charge of Carlisle United, Coventry City, Fleetwood Town and Falkirk. He spent time in the Cypriot First Division with Pafos. He thinks that “the time is right” for his return to Scotland. Considered an up-and-coming managerial prospect, he is now set to take the reins at Dundee.
In those first comments as head coach, Pressley made no bones about what he expects from his club. “The aspirations are certainly to finish top six but success for Dundee can come in many ways,” he stated. He highlighted the need to accomplish tangible goals to help create a winning culture within the organization.
“In order for us to grow as a club and have time to grow as a club, you have to get over certain hurdles and that is winning certain games.” – Steven Pressley
Despite his ambitions, Pressley candidly addressed expectations regarding trophy wins, stating, “If you’re looking for a manager that’s got a history of winning titles, winning trophies, then I’m not your man.” Rather than focusing purely on winning right now, he’s committed to talent development and making deep connections with players. “I’ve not demonstrated that as yet, but I’ve demonstrated through my time that I have the ability to connect and develop young talent,” he added.
Pressley’s appointment comes at an important juncture for Dundee. The team is looking to improve their position in the league and regain the trust after a difficult year. He replaces Docherty in the role. Docherty was hoping to continue the good work from last year, but he wasn’t able to keep his side in a competitive position in the league.
Undoubtedly, Dundee is entering an exciting new chapter with Pressley at the wheel. Fans and players alike are eager to see how his vision will translate to their on-pitch performances. Having established ambitious but realistic targets for the 2021-22 season, optimism abounds around the club’s futures on and off the field.
