Sauce Gardner, the reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and 2023 Pro Bowler. He made it abundantly clear that he wants to be with this organization for the long-term. At just 24 years old, Gardner has already claimed the name of NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2022 and is a two-time All-Pro. He is excited to be active in making the Jets’ fortunes quickly change.
Gardner’s dedication to the team should be a good sign for the Jets as they continue their pursuit of an extension with him. His fifth-year option was exercised this past May, leaving him with at least two more years on his rookie deal. The young cornerback said he’s hopeful about where things are headed with the franchise and his place in changing the culture around the organization.
“I feel like they’re doing a great job and changing the culture for sure,” Gardner stated, reflecting his confidence in the current coaching staff. He credited defensive coordinator Steve Wilks for his work ethic and commitment. He praised new head coach Aaron Glenn for fostering a winning attitude among the team.
“He’s one of the top corners in the league, but that consistency of being that dominant player each and every week, that’s what we’re looking for,” Wilks said of Gardner’s potential impact.
As minicamp started, his presence was paramount, Gardner clarified. He stated, “My main focus has been being the best football player I can be, but my team and the Jets have been talking and, you know, I feel pretty good about how the talks have been going.” His commitment to training and development reinforces his commitment to making himself a pivotal part of the team’s success.
Gardner isn’t the only Jets player who’s helping to create the Jets’ exciting future. Fellow 2022 draft class members Garrett Wilson and Jermaine Johnson are quickly emerging. That intense rookie season only bonded the trio more. Today, they’re all committed to helping take that team to the next level together.
Gardner’s contract has been a topic of conversation. He doesn’t make a peep about if he wants to surpass Derek Stingley Jr. stakes. “I don’t really want to get into the numbers,” he noted, suggesting that his primary focus lies on improving his game and contributing to the team’s aspirations.
