Major League Cricket Gears Up for Third Edition Amid Optimism for Growth

Major League Cricket (MLC) is set to launch its third edition this Friday at 02:00 BST, with matches taking place at the Oakland Athletic Stadium, a venue that previously served as the home of the Oakland Athletics baseball team. Johnny Grave, chief executive of MLC, said the tournament was a “huge” opportunity. He thinks it has the opportunity to create a strong niche following here in the United States.

The new team, Washington Freedom, will face the San Francisco Unicorns in their first match of this season. Sanjay Govil — the owner of the Washington Freedom. He is an American-Indian IT entrepreneur who creates long term business opportunities through intellectual property. In a truly recent turn of events, Govil consented to purchase a majority 50% stake in Fire. This appointment cements his leadership in the growing sports management landscape.

This year’s edition of MLC features some big names including fellow Englishmen Liam Plunkett and Alex Hales. Plunkett, who now lives in Pennsylvania with his American wife, comes to the tournament with a wealth of experience. Hales raises the competitive balance of the entire league. Both players will hope to have a deep impact on their new teams, yielding greater success come May.

Last week, Johnny Grave attended an informal meeting of global franchise owners at Lord’s, where discussions centered on collaboration in the cricketing community. He has faith in the strong collaborative spirit that resides within MLC. This optimism is indicative of Dwyer’s larger goal to raise the sport’s stature in North America. Grave emphasized that MLC should not be viewed as a threat to The Hundred, the popular domestic competition in England. To that, he counters that both leagues can exist together and help grow the game of cricket.

Through its franchise tournament model, MLC hopes to draw a wide national and international viewership while creating local interest and community support for the sport of cricket. The league’s strategic focus on establishing a fan base in the U.S. underscores its long-term vision and ambition to elevate cricket’s status in the region.
