Ireland’s most anticipated first senior international T20 international against the West Indies was disappointing as rainy Ireland weather caused its abandonment. The game was to be held at Bready on Thursday as part of a three-game T20 series. Sadly, the weather gods had different plans that day, resulting in the cancellation of their opening day game.
The rain kept coming all day, making the pitch impossible to play on. Officials conducted several checks, but after running out of possible adjustments, determined that the conditions would not allow for a safe and fair contest. That’s a blow for both teams as they wanted to come out and start this series off with an exciting bang.
We’ve restructured the series in light of the abandoned game and the resulting Saturday and Sunday matches. It has made the upcoming matches even more crucial. Neither team wants to be the one that blinks first in a best-of-three series.
And so the West Indies return once more to Bready, a locale that surely occupies high ground in their memory bank. In 1969, they suffered at least one humiliating loss in that ground when Ireland bowled them out for just 25 runs! That backdrop only adds more fascinating context to this current series. Both sides are hell-bent on re-writing their cricketing rivalry’s narrative.
In fact, this T20 series marks the second occurrence in the past year that Ireland and the West Indies have gone head-to-head. Only last month, Ireland and Scotland battled it out in an ODI series in Dublin, sharing the spoils with a 2-2 draw. This recent history adds an extra layer of excitement to the T20 matches.
