Talanoa Hufanga has officially inked his three-year contract with the Denver Broncos. This contract, a total value of $39 million with $6 million more in possible performance incentives. The Broncos didn’t mess around as they are on a mission to make their already stout defense even better. That’s because last year they finished first in the entire league in sacks and third in scoring defense, giving up only 18.3 points per game.
After four years in the Bay Area, Hufanga joins the Broncos with plenty of playmaking experience from his standout rookie season in San Francisco’s secondary. He was instrumental in leading the team to three NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl appearance. Known for his high-energy performance on the field, Hufanga demonstrated his skills during team drills, where he made a notable interception that left his defensive teammates energized and eager to build upon their previous successes.
The 2022 season was a breakout career high for Hufanga. He finished with 97 tackles, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles, leading to a first-team All-Pro selection. On the field, he’s stood out like a sore thumb as an elite, high-end, cause-and-effect player. He showed strong vision and anticipation during the Broncos’ offseason training program.
Hufanga has been working with new teammate, and fellow safety, Brandon Jones to build that chemistry ahead of the upcoming season. The two have been combining their talents to work on some of the team’s defensive looks. Immediately after signing, Hufanga found a few moments to speak with John Lynch, his old general manager with the 49ers. Lynch couldn’t contain his enthusiasm at the prospect of Hufanga bringing his skillset to the Mile High city.
“The fun starts when the play starts.” – John Lynch
Hufanga is determined to contribute to the Broncos’ legacy at the safety position, which includes three Hall of Famers: John Lynch, Steve Atwater, and Brian Dawkins. He shared on social media his excitement to be joining the league’s most storied franchise.
“I think it’s amazing here, I think it has everything you can think of.” – Talanoa Hufanga
Even with that pedigree though, Hufanga’s career has been characterized by injury struggles throughout his young life. He has run into health issues the past two years, appearing in just 17 games combined in that span. That’s a torn ACL in 2023 and torn wrist ligaments in 2024. Addressing these challenges, he said, “Injury is just part of the game,” while showing the grit to push through and put years of missed opportunities behind him.
Hufanga, who was a quality defender for the Warriors, slides into his new role with the Broncos easily, contributing all-around. His leadership traits have already made an impression on fellow Giants foes and coaches. Secretary Lynch lauded him as “one of the best communicators.” He’s a master of getting others involved and building chemistry.
The Broncos’ defensive unit had already established a reputation for excellence last season, leading the league in defensive expected points added with a total of 74.55. With Hufanga’s addition we will enhance our tactical genius. No doubt he’s going to be making plays that change the game all season.
“Don’t even watch highlights, just watch … play after play and you’ll see.” – D.J. Jones
Hufanga’s commitment to his craft and his desire to elevate the Broncos’ defense aligns perfectly with the team’s aspirations for the upcoming season. His ride from the 49ers to Denver represents a huge personal milestone. It gives him an opportunity to put his stamp on a storied franchise with a tradition of defensive greatness.
