Micah Parsons Remains Hopeful for Contract Resolution Amid Cowboys Minicamp

As the Dallas Cowboys approach the start of minicamp, All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons’ contract saga rumbles on. David Mulugheta, his agent, is a key participant in these negotiations. Parsons has pressed that no deal will be cut without Mulugheta on board. Though the future is still unclear, Parsons said he was hopeful for a deal in the near future.

In recent years, the Cowboys have shown an inclination to wait until literally the last minute to work out big deals. Only last year, they went and made Dak Prescott their highest-paid quarterback in the entire NFL. They unanimously approved an unprecedented annual salary of $60 million for him. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb just signed an amazing new deal, becoming the second-highest-paid receiver in the league at $34 million. These promising deals came only after far too long. Lamb’s contract was settled just before the season opener, while Prescott’s took shape after he missed almost all of training camp.

Parsons and Hall of Fame owner Jerry Jones spent nearly 30 minutes recently chatting on the practice field. While the conversation was not about the particulars of a new contract, it established a visible level of transparency and dialogue between player and front office. It was at this time that Parsons called Jones in March. Then, after that, Jones has not reached out to him regarding the contract situation.

The heart of the tourism industry’s troubles today is who gets stuck playing the bad guy in a new round of negotiations. Parsons insisted that it is still Jones’ duty to keep the talks going and get a deal completed. Parsons will earn $9.1 million this year, as he’s playing on his fifth-year option contract this season. This agreement will haul him in a little over $21 million.

Though the cloud of uncertainty has yet to lift, Parsons is still “pretty hopeful” that an agreement could be reached in time. While he knows how complicated everything is, he believes firmly that solutions can be found. His most recent sessions with teammates, including cornerback Trevon Diggs, were cut short on Tuesday by back tightness. Despite those challenges, Parsons seems to be fairly upbeat as he eyes the upcoming season.

As the Cowboys get ready for training camp and a new season, all eyes will continue to be on getting Parsons’ contract situation worked out. The franchise’s recent history indicates that negotiations almost always come down to the wire. Parsons’ optimism for an early resolution hints at what could be a drastically different outcome this year.
