Versatile Jeremy Chinn Poised for Impact in Raiders Defense

The Las Vegas Raiders are getting ready to make full use of Jeremy Chinn’s multifaceted skills on their defensive front. We can’t wait to see what kind of magic they bring to 2024! Chinn just signed a two-year, $16.8 million contract tender with a second-rounder attached. Safe to say, we’re bound to see huge plays and contributions from someone with that much experience and versatility on the field.

Now breaking the 1,000 snap barrier as a safety to outside linebacker convert. This otherworldly experience just points to his elite talent and versatility to thrive at any defensive position. Beyond that, he’s got 389 snaps at off-ball linebacker and 908 snaps in the slot. His ability to play various roles will be critical as the Raiders invest in improving their defense.

In the past season, Chinn recorded an interception and five pass breakups, demonstrating his capability to impact the game significantly. He had his share of struggles, allowing five touchdowns and a 119.7 passer rating when thrown at. He was thrown at 43 times and gave up 28 catches for 354 yards.

The Raiders are optimistic over Chinn’s upside, especially given his size and freaky athleticism. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham highlighted Chinn’s leadership qualities, stating, “Just in terms of his leadership, he’s very sure of himself because he puts in the work.” That sense of work ethic will be needed with the team aiming to improve upon their bottom-line performance this year.

Former Raiders defensive backs coach John Spytek, who spent time coaching Chinn, raved about his strength as well as length and versatility. “You love his size on the edge, his ability to blitz [and] support the run. Then he’s a guy that can still drop and play as part of the deep coverage, too,” Spytek remarked. Chinn’s ability to impact the game in various ways aligns with his own sentiments: “I feel like I can affect the game in a lot of ways.”

Chinn’s arrival would greatly compliment Tre’von Moehrig’s breakout year turnaround last season. Moehrig finished with 30 run stops and was tied for seventh among safeties with 26 run stops. He tallied 13 quarterback hurries, cementing his status as one of the top defensive threats in the country.

Moehrig just inked a three-year, $51 million deal with the Carolina Panthers. He is deserving of this contract based on how he displayed his talents while being deployed near the line of scrimmage. As a defender, he has raised the bar of what defensive play should be. This offseason performance further proves just how important physical presence is for today’s modern safety position.

Mae Chinn and Brandi Moehrig are a powerful duo. Their talents mesh beautifully, and together, the Raiders are creating one heck of a scary defensive foundation. With that deadly combination of Chinn’s versatile experience and Moehrig’s effectiveness, it all leads to a really promising outlook for the team’s new defensive tandem.

As training camp unfolds, fans and analysts alike will focus their eyes squarely on Chinn. They’re eager to see how he adjusts to his new role, including how well he can play alongside Moehrig. Ideally, the Raiders’ coaching staff is hopeful that both players will maximize their strengths to really strengthen the defense.
