Chelsea FC are reportedly very keen on teenage winger Jamie Gittens. The end of the summer transfer window is quickly drawing near! The London club has been after the 20-year-old prodigy, who has taken his talents to Borussia Dortmund for now. They are looking to lock in that deal before Tuesday’s cut-off.
Gittens, who Chelsea were reported to be chasing in January, remains high on the club’s wish-list. This initial list is heavily attacking, eight or maybe nine of the players are attacking players. Rated at £50 million, he would be an enormous statement of intent for Chelsea as they continue to overhaul their squad. The club is especially interested in signing Gittens to have him available for next winter’s Club World Cup.
Towards the end of last season, Gittens lost his place in Dortmund’s starting XI, a situation that may have prompted Chelsea’s renewed interest. Unlike high-profile players such as Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham, Gittens’ journey from Reading to Borussia Dortmund has been marked by significant development potential.
Dortmund identified Gittens’ talent early and made a clever move by acquiring him. At the time, he wasn’t even in the same zip code as their first team. No one personifies that Dortmund philosophy, cultivated by CEO Lars Ricken, more than Bellingham – and not just because he’s a homegrown wonder. His reasoning, apparently, went something like this: “When we bought him, he wasn’t Sancho’s level. We thought we could turn him into a great player. It was a great collaboration among our amateur scouting department, pro department and academy department.”
Chelsea is still hoping to add a third name to its attacking frontline. The club is still to confirm wingers Callum Hudson-Odoi clashing and Vinicius Jr. They’re looking at other attacking talents, like Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko. Despite a successful loan spell, Chelsea chose not to make Jadon Sancho’s move permanent. This change underscores just how impatient they are for someone younger to reinvigorate their stagnating depth option at the winger position.
With just days remaining until the transfer window closes, Chelsea will be looking to move fast in signing Gittens. Signing Gittens would provide Chelsea with a top talent for the long haul. It would help solve their more pressing issue of needing attacking depth.
