Jay Wright, the former head coach of Villanova University, will not be in contention for the head coaching position with the New York Knicks. Wright has a personal connection with Knicks president Leon Rose. He’s made it all but official by declaring that he will indeed remain retired and not seek the job.
Wright, 63, had never previously acknowledged any serious interest in the Knicks job, but he did entertain that possibility with Rose in a few minutes of polite chit chat. Unfortunately, he was never officially invited for an interview. The lack of an official inquiry makes it clear that the Knicks were never really interested in Wright as a candidate. This indicates that at least some back channel discussions have occurred.
After more than 20 years at Villanova, Wright stepped down from the coaching profession in 2022. His time at the university was one of the most successful ever, winning two NCAA Championships. Upon retirement, he joined CBS, then later TNT as an analyst. Nowadays, he imparts his basketball knowledge to a far larger audience.
Fans are excited and abuzz with the speculation of what Wright’s potential return to the sidelines could mean. He has sent very strong signals that he’s quite content to stay put. He further communicated to the Knicks organization that under no circumstances does he want to accept the coaching position. For one, he wants to enjoy his retirement without the head coach grind. This decision comes exactly in line with that wish.
Josh Hart, who played for Wright at Villanova, expressed the same feelings regarding Wright’s retirement. Walking into that hornets’ nest, he jokingly warned Wright to “stay retired.” Hart’s lighthearted comment reflects the respect and admiration many have for Wright’s accomplishments and current choice to step back from coaching.
