NFL Legend Jim Marshall Passes Away at 87

Jim Marshall, celebrated as the Minnesota Vikings’ “all-time iron man,” died this week at the age of 87. Marshall’s incredible career forever changed the face of the NFL. As a player he is best remembered for his 282 consecutive games streak, a record he set as he retired in 1979. His legacy as one of football’s fiercest competitors is forever sealed in time. Fans and your teammates alike rejoice that you made history as being one of the most significant contributors to the Vikings franchise.

Marshall’s story with the Vikings started in that first season for them in 1961. He soon found himself a cornerstone of the franchise, as he never missed a game from that moment on. During those 20 years, he proved to be more than just durable, but downright elite, helping anchor the team’s success for two decades. Marshall’s streak of 270 consecutive games played with the Vikings stood unbroken until it was surpassed by Brett Favre in 2009.

Among them all, Jim Marshall has the most remarkable streak in NFL history. He is currently tied with Jason Taylor for the career record in opponent fumbles recovered, each with 29. He accumulated 130.5 quarterback sacks during his career, a total that would place him No. 22 on the all-time NFL list. His achievements on the field earned him respect from both teammates and opponents, a testament to his leadership and work ethic.

In 1964, Marshall burst onto the national scene with a superlative signature moment in his career. In 1976 during a regular season contest against the San Francisco 49ers, Jackson made NFL Films history by returning an opponent’s fumble on the wrong side of the field. Even the best players have bonehead plays, and that all-important unusual play was that safety.

The Minnesota Vikings institution released a touching statement remembering Marshall’s influence.

“The entire Minnesota Vikings organization is mourning the loss of Jim Marshall. No player in Vikings history lived the ideals of toughness, camaraderie and passion more than the all-time iron man,” – Vikings owners Mark and Zygi Wilf.

On and off the field, the football community will miss him dearly. As an unmatched competitor and a cantankerous, compassionate leader of men, Jim Marshall’s legacy should echo for eons.

“A cornerstone of the franchise from the beginning, Captain Jim’s unmatched durability and quiet leadership earned the respect of teammates and opponents throughout his 20-year career. Jim led by example, and there was no finer example for others to follow. His impact on the Vikings was felt long after he left the field. Jim will always be remembered as a tremendous player and person. Our hearts are with his wife, Susan, and all of Jim’s loved ones.” – Vikings owners Mark and Zygi Wilf.

As the football community mourns his loss, Jim Marshall’s legacy as a warrior on the field and a leader off it will undoubtedly endure.
