Veteran cornerback Ronald Darby has decided to retire from professional football after a productive ten-year career. At 31 years old, Darby calls it a career after an impressive NFL ride. He has suited up for the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Football Team, Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, and most recently for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans.
Darby started his career as a second-round draft pick from Florida State in 2015. He certainly made the biggest impact right away by finishing second in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting that season. In his rookie year, he started 15 games and logged two interceptions and 68 tackles. His impressive debut was a sign of things to come as he went on to play a career-high 118 games and make 107 starts.
On March 15, 2024, Darby re-signed with the Texans, signing a one-year contract as an unrestricted free agent. He was supposed to give some veteran’s guidance to the team’s young rookie starting cornerbacks, Kamari Lassiter and Derek Stingley Jr. Darby would start 12 games for the Jaguars in the 2024 season before being released. His stay in Houston didn’t last long.
The Texans put Darby on the reserve/retired list on Monday, essentially sending him into retirement. Over his decade-long career, he made remarkable statistics, like eight interceptions and 106 passes defended with 447 tackles.
Darby’s journey through the NFL proved to be a testament to his resilience and adaptability. He credits his time spent with each of the six franchises for shaping him as the player and person he is today. His experience, expertise, and encouragement factored heavily into a positive outcome for every team he became a part of.
