Stefon Diggs came out firing on all cylinders Monday at the New England Patriots’ voluntary organized team activities (OTA). He came back after he had missed last week. He answered questions shortly after a widely seen viral video appeared that featured fellow quarterback competition Diggs on a boat. This didn’t necessarily impress head coach Mike Vrabel, who made clear that players need to focus on their decision making.
After all the missed spring practices, Diggs finally made his way out to the practice fields. Having just signed a hefty three-year, $69 million pact with the Patriots, he met the press with exuberance. Upon his arrival, he waved and said, “Nice to see you all,” signaling a positive return to the team environment.
Yet his absence had raised eyebrows among coaching staff and fans alike. Titans head coach Mike Vrabel expressed his dismay that Diggs made the choice to intervene in this way after seeing the viral video. The film captured a great vibe that was antithetical to the uptight world of pro football.
Wide receivers coach Todd Downing remarked on Diggs’ commitment to stay informed about the team’s plays and system. He noted that despite his limited participation, Diggs had been diligent in keeping up with the information and materials provided to the players.
“As far as the conversations with Stef, I’ll keep the stuff we talk about between the two of us,” – Todd Downing
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels congratulated Diggs for returning to practice. He recognized that the voluntary nature of OTAs provides players the ability to opt in or not, depending on their own circumstances.
“It’s a voluntary part of the year, we know that,” – Josh McDaniels
Then again, Diggs has been busting his ass to learn the Patriots’ system. He’s pulling from his experience from his time with the Buffalo Bills and OC Brian Daboll. While his comfort level with such schemes will undoubtedly help him settle into this new environment.
As the Patriots continue their preparations for the upcoming season, Diggs’ return marks a significant step in reinforcing the team’s receiving corps. With ongoing efforts to synchronize with his teammates and coaches, Diggs aims to establish a strong rapport as they move closer to training camp.
