Sri Lanka Welcomes Pakistan for Women’s World Cup Matches Amid Regional Tensions

Sri Lanka, too, will witness a kaleidoscope of exciting matches in this year’s Women’s World Cup. This year’s tournament will take place September 30 – November 2. This tournament will see Pakistan play all their group games in Colombo, where they will face formidable opponents, including India and England. The decision to host these matches in Sri Lanka comes amidst ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly following India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the men’s Champions Trophy earlier this year.

Pakistan is scheduled to play seven group matches at the Women’s World Cup. These matches will all be played within the confines of the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. If the team performs well and advances in the tournament, Colombo will host a semi-final and potentially the final. The International Cricket Council (ICC) brought in neutral venues such as Sri Lanka. This decision was made under the backdrop of mounting geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan.

Bengaluru will kick off the Women’s World Cup with the opening match featuring India, which adds to the excitement surrounding the tournament’s commencement. The other city Bengaluru is due to host the final — if Pakistan are not playing that match. Other Indian cities participating in the Women’s World Cup include Guwahati, Indore, and Visakhapatnam, each set to contribute to the tournament’s vibrant atmosphere.

The ICC’s decision to play all matches at neutral venues is a result of a long process of diplomatic disasters between the two cricketing nations. This was Pakistan’s first time visiting India for a men’s 50-over World Cup in 2023. India in turn has refused to play in Pakistan for multiple tournaments, time and again on “security grounds.”

October frequently brings torrential rains to Sri Lanka. This is all huge because it changes the game for tournament teams in a drastic way when it comes to match conditions. As the reigning World Cup champs, Australia — along with the pressure of being hosts — step into the competition ready to make this edition even more magical.

Even as the final of this year’s Women’s World Cup remains in doubt, U.S. If Pakistan gets through, it should be held in either Sri Lanka or India. In some welcome news, a different final date has indeed been fixed — for July 5, 2026, at Lord’s.
