Oldham Athletic marked a triumphant return to the English Football League (EFL) by defeating Southend United 3-2 in a gripping National League play-off final held at Wembley Stadium. The contest on the night of May 20, 2023, was an action packed, give-and-take feud. Oldham had to come from behind twice and capped a fine comeback with a stunning last-minute goal.
The moment of truth came in the 112th minute when Kian Harratt scored Oldham’s winner. Harratt’s goal not only secured the victory but sealed Oldham’s return to the EFL after three seasons competing outside the league’s structure.
As the game started, there was another surprise in store. Southend took the lead when an own goal from Manny Monthe of Oldham put the hosts ahead. Oldham wouldn’t let the loss get him down. They fought back and drew level when Joe Garner coolly slotted home a penalty after Monthe was bundled over in the box. Fortunately for the visitors, Garner’s go-ahead goal restored Oldham’s grit. Just earlier in the half, they were close to equalizing when Garner’s header off a corner rattled the crossbar.
Within 20 minutes, Southend came back and scored, then took the lead. Their first real shot on goal was a perfectly executed chip shot that put them up 2-1. Oldham was not ready to give up on this opportunity. In a remarkable display of determination, they equalized again in the 110th minute when James Norwood latched onto a long ball. With deft skill and great poise, he worked around Southend keeper Steve Hayes (on the right side of goal) before tucking the ball into an open goal.
Micky Mellon, Oldham’s manager, had the same squad selection each match. This very squad only recently bested York City in the semi-final, highlighting just how certain he was of their talents. It became a contentious and at times nasty affair with clashes over due process rights and witness intimidation. Oldham would have felt aggrieved when Mike Fondop went down in the box after a challenge from Harry Taylor. In fact, they agreed that incident deserved a penalty.
Ultimately, Harratt’s late winner capped off a thrilling encounter that highlighted Oldham’s tenacity and fighting spirit throughout the match.
