Kirk Cousins, the veteran quarterback, missed the Atlanta Falcons’ first practice of voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) on Tuesday. His absence was questioned widely by fans and players on the team. His absence raises questions about his long-term fit with the team. Recently, he allegedly met with Falcons owner Arthur Blank, pleading his case to be released from the franchise. Cousins hopes to land a starting job in the NFL in the 2023 season.
That meeting with Blank is a reminder of Cousins demonstrable desire to continue looking for a fresh start. Cousins has been an official member of the Falcons for about a week. He’s continually looking for more clarity into that role, which is something offensive coordinator Zac Robinson said. The Falcons have been very public with their support of their second-year pro, Michael Penix Jr. This support only serves to further complicate Cousins’ standing within the organization.
Cousins’ financial situation further complicates matters. He has a $27.5 million contract for 2025 guaranteed as well, which is unaffected by his release. On top of that, he carries a no-trade clause, so he would have to approve any trade deal. Any team that acquired him would have to deal with a $10 million roster bonus scheduled for 2026.
Head coach Raheem Morris went on to say that Cousins was not at the facility on Tuesday. He stressed once again that the team’s continued steadfastness on him since last season ended. The Falcons must feel good about Cousins being Penix’s backup. That would indicate they are not at all feeling any pressure to decide soon with some urgency on his future.
As such, Cousins can miss voluntary OTAs without risk of suspension. He’s able to follow what interests him without fear of being penalized. Regardless, the Falcons are hoping he shows up for the mandatory minicamp tentatively planned for June 10 and 11.
