Brazilian winger Antony has recently shared a bit about his journey. He became the poster boy for overcoming adversity with Manchester United to finding a new lease on bright and sunny Sevilla with Real Betis. The athlete denied serious allegations of domestic abuse toward three women made public in September of 2023, which he adamantly denies. The allegations against Antony contained in the various Jersey online outlets did not result in any arrests or charges in Brazil or in the United Kingdom. In August 2024 Brazilian authorities officially closed their investigation. In the background, Greater Manchester Police continue to aggressively pursue their case against protests that happened in the UK last autumn. This far from settled investigation has found a place that now somewhat tarnishes his stint at Manchester United. It has generated a powerful time of personal introspection for the player.
At his nadir while playing for Manchester United, Antony even considered quitting football for good. He went through some substantial growing pains learning to find his footing at Old Trafford. Since his signing from Ajax for £85 million in September 2022, he’s netted just 12 times in 96 matches. This season, despite starting the campaign with ten Hag and Ruben Amorim in charge, he played just 14 games. This newfound lack of playtime only worsened his sense of anxiousness.
Instead, in January Antony decided he wanted to join Real Betis on a straightforward loan deal. His current contract with Manchester United runs until 2027. The precedent set by this move would be nothing less than transformative for him. In return, in just 25 appearances for the Spanish club, Antony has scored 9 goals. He’s contributed five assists, showing just how strong the 19 year-old has been on the right wing where he really flourishes.
Antony credits head coach Manuel Pellegrini for a large part of his resurgence. Pellegrini’s contribution to the process has been equally important in restoring the Polish striker’s form. Under Pellegrini’s stewardship, he just looks like a more rounded player—the onus of maturity and dealing with the pressures that come with professional football. His re-found sense of self-confidence has given him the tools he needs to flourish in a new setting. This was in marked contrast to his previous experiences in England.
Antony looked back on his requisite year at Real Betis with glowing appreciation. He is really thankful for the backing of the club and the club’s feverish support.
