Eagles Stand Behind Sirianni Following Contract Extension

Eagles Stand Behind Sirianni Following Contract Extension

Nick Sirianni has already earned his contract extension from the Philadelphia Eagles. Players and management are getting on the same page to maximize the chances for their head coach. Hired in 2021 by owner Jeffrey Lurie to replace Doug Pederson, Sirianni was something of a mystery hiring at the time. His time has been marked by unprecedented success, which has recently earned him a multiyear contract extension.

When Lurie first appointed Sirianni, he called him an “independent thinker” with a “football IQ through the roof.” The owner contrasted Sirianni’s boundless work ethic and drive to be the best, traits that have found a home in the organization. While Lurie was pleased by Sirianni’s competitive edge, he urged him to let it all hang out. He encouraged him to build a culture of collaboration by looking beyond his usual network when bringing on coaches.

With an impressive .701 win percentage, Sirianni now has the 5th highest win percentage of all time among NFL head coaches with 75 or more games. In four seasons with the Eagles he’s compiled a 54-23 record, including playoff wins. That jaw-dropping accomplishment features four playoff berths, two conference championships and a Super Bowl crown.

It worked wonders for Sirianni earlier in the season. After a 2023 campaign that ended with an underwhelming 1-6 finish, he came under fire and spotlighted questions about his professional future. Contract extension notwithstanding, the decision reveals a deep conviction, both in what’s already been created, and what yet could be.

Sirianni’s competitive fire has largely shaped the way he coaches, though this is something he’s spent years learning to control. While there have been instances of tension on the sideline—such as a heated exchange with former Eagles tight end Zach Ertz following a game against the Washington Commanders and an incident with fans during a Week 6 matchup against the Cleveland Browns—he has shown growth in managing his emotions during games.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts lauded Sirianni’s ability to weather the storm of criticism.

“Every one of those things… has shaped me to be who I am today and has made me better as a result of it,” – Jalen Hurts.

Hurts acknowledged that the unique path to this point they’ve taken has been a learning experience for both him and Sirianni.

Jordan Mailata, the Eagles’ Australian-born left tackle, spoke about how much Sirianni had grown and changed the team culture.

“And I think about that time… when he talked about the flower, and now I just want to give him his flowers. He’s done a phenomenal job… It’s no surprise that he got a multiyear contract,” – Jordan Mailata.

Star wide receiver A.J. Brown took to Twitter to express his appreciation for Sirianni’s impact on him individually and the organization as a whole.

“All the scrutiny he’s gotten, and to be able to come back every year… he’s always me first, then you,” – Jordan Mailata.

Solid support from both players and management, indicating a player-management alliance. Indeed, as Sirianni continues to shape and mold the Eagles, there’s a lot to look forward to. His willingness to change and evolve with his players is still the crux of his coaching ethos.

“[Last week] I told him congrats, and I told him I’m done when he’s done,” – A.J. Brown.

The support from both players and management signals a unified front as Sirianni continues to guide the Eagles into what many hope will be a bright future. His ability to adapt and grow alongside his players remains a focal point of his coaching philosophy.
