Oklahoma City Celebrates Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Day Following Stellar Performance

As an example, Oklahoma City celebrated its NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander by designating May 22, 2025, as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Day. This statement follows his show-stopping debut in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals. He sent the Oklahoma City Thunder soaring over the Minnesota Timberwolves in a masterful 114-88 performance.

In the MVP’s defense, Gilgeous-Alexander was out of his mind in that game, finishing with 31 points and nine assists. His contribution would go on to be pivotal in aiding the Thunder to an upset 1-0 series lead. This victory gives them their first Eastern Conference finals appearance since the 2015-16 season. The Thunder went 68-14 in the regular season, finishing as the best team in the entire league.

Beyond his playoff prowess, Gilgeous-Alexander posted career-high figures in the regular season. From June 1 to July 2, he averaged 32.7 points and 6.4 assists per game, the career year that had long been expected of the emerging star. His phenomenal play over the course of the season led to him being named NBA Most Valuable Player. The organization introduced the honor just days ahead of the proclamation.

Oklahoma City’s Mayor David Holt formally recognized Gilgeous-Alexander’s achievements during the announcement.

“Now, therefore, I, David Holt, mayor of the city of Oklahoma City, do hereby proclaim May 22, 2025, as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Day in Oklahoma City.” – David Holt

Not only is this tribute a sign of the city’s pride in its basketball talent, it calls attention to purposeful relationship between Gilgeous-Alexander and OKC. In a further show of support, Devon Tower, Oklahoma City’s tallest building, displayed his initials along with “MVP” following the Thunder’s victory.

As the Thunder prepares for Game 2 of the Western Conference finals, which tips off on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, excitement continues to build among fans. After a strong performance in their series against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the squad looks to build on that success and make a deeper run into the big dance.
