Craig Kessler Appointed as New LPGA Commissioner

And the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) follows suit by hiring Craig Kessler as their next commissioner. Kessler, 39, will assume the position officially on July 15. He takes over from Mollie Marcoux Samaan, who left the role in January after three and a half years in the position.

Kessler’s selection marks a significant moment in LPGA history as he becomes the organization’s 10th commissioner. Prior to his role at NIGP, Kessler was chief operating officer of the PGA of America. He comes to the position with over two years of deep institutional knowledge with the organization under his belt. With an impressive educational pedigree that includes Haverford College and Yale Law School, he is a graduate of Georgetown University and received his MBA from Harvard Business School.

Prior to his time with the PGA of America, Kessler served six years in private equity as an operating partner. During that time, he worked with the biggest names in private equity, including Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Providence Equity. Previously, he was Chief Executive Officer and Director of Buff City Soap. While he was at the helm, the company more than doubled from 100 to 260 stores!

As board chair, John Veihmeyer, observed at the time, Kessler’s selection was historic. He stated, “We set out to find a transformational leader with a deep appreciation for the LPGA’s legacy and a clear vision of what’s possible for our future.” Veihmeyer further described Kessler as “an inspiring and engaging leader, who brings a unique mix of executive leadership experience, deep relationships in the golf industry, and a genuine commitment to empowering women and girls through golf.”

In comments about taking on his new role, Kessler said he was looking forward to the challenges. “I don’t think this is one of those opportunities where we start with 100 days of listening. It’s time to explode out of the gates,” he said. Kessler aims to redefine the LPGA’s impact in the sports world, stating, “This isn’t just about leading a sports organization. It’s about redefining what’s possible.”

Kessler brings a very explicit agenda to this key position. He has a continued obligation to raise the LPGA’s visibility and voice in the greater golf ecosystem and, honestly, the world. It’s this deep-rooted experience that props up his passion for the sport. As a result, IMG and the LPGA will play a crucial role in the future of women’s golf.
